Work conditioning: the bridge back to full duty
Most injured workers reach a point where they’ve recovered enough to move on from basic therapy — but they’re not yet ready for the real physical demands of their job. Work conditioning closes that gap. It’s a structured, progressive program that rebuilds the strength, endurance, and movement your specific job requires, and proves — objectively — when you’re ready to return to full duty.
What is work conditioning?
Work conditioning is an intensive, goal-oriented rehabilitation program — typically several hours a day, multiple days a week — designed to restore an injured worker’s physical capacity to meet the specific demands of their job. Instead of generic exercises, it simulates real work tasks: lifting, carrying, climbing, sustained standing, and repetitive motion, progressively loaded until you can perform them safely, all day.
Work conditioning focuses on physical reconditioning; work hardening adds full work-simulation and job-behavior components. Forward provides both, matched to the case.
Who it’s for
- Injured workers cleared for reconditioning but not yet ready for full duty
- Workers’ compensation cases that need a documented, safe return-to-work path
- Anyone rebuilding capacity after a work injury, surgery, or extended time off
How our program works
- Baseline assessment — we measure your current capacity against your job’s real physical demands.
- Job-specific reconditioning — progressive loading built around your actual tasks, not generic exercises.
- Objective testing (Return+) — we track measurable progress, so “ready” is a number, not a guess.
- Return-to-work testing and FCE — objective documentation of what you can safely do.
- Coordination the whole way — with your employer and carrier, so everyone stays aligned on the plan and the timeline.
Your FCE — completed in-house
When it’s time to document what a worker can safely do, we complete the Functional Capacity Evaluation right here. No sending anyone to an outside vendor, no scheduling gap, no lost momentum. It’s the seamless capstone to the same program that got them there, run by the same team that knows the case — faster, cleaner, and one less provider to coordinate.
Organized case management — communication that connects
In workers’ comp, coordination is everything. We built our own software to keep every party aligned and moving:
- We facilitate communication with your specialist — primary care, orthopedics, surgeon — so the whole care team stays on the same page.
- We facilitate communication with your payer — the carrier or adjuster gets exactly what they need, when they need it.
- Updates, plan-of-care certifications, and bulk records requests flow to all parties in one coordinated stream, powered by our own systems, Echo (records) and Lune (clinical documentation).
- Because we’re independent, we work with every local provider equally — our directory spans 500+ medical providers across every local hospital group, so wherever your worker was treated, we’re already connected.
- And it stays human: you call, a real person answers, and we get on the phone with your providers directly.
Proactive, organized case management is built into how we work — a partner that reduces the case manager’s burden instead of adding to it.
For employers & case managers
- One provider for the whole continuum — PT, work conditioning, and the FCE, all in-house.
- One point of contact for updates, documentation, and the return-to-work timeline.
- Faster, safer return to full duty — less lost productivity, shorter claim duration, lower total cost.
- Objective, defensible data at every step, from Return+ testing through the in-house FCE.
Why Forward PT
It starts with true physical therapy — hands-on, doctor-led care, with a full hour with a Doctor of Physical Therapy every visit. Same-day and next-day access, on-site options at local employers, and a team that works with the carrier and employer, not around them. We treat the worker like a person and the claim like it matters — because both do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between work conditioning and work hardening?
Work conditioning focuses on rebuilding physical capacity — strength, endurance, and movement tied to your job’s demands. Work hardening adds full work-task simulation and job-behavior components. Forward provides both and matches the program to the case.
Do you complete the FCE in-house?
Yes. We complete the Functional Capacity Evaluation right here — no sending the worker to an outside vendor. It’s run by the same team that managed the reconditioning, so it’s faster, seamless, and one less provider for the case manager to coordinate.
Do I need a referral to start?
No referral is needed to get started — and we coordinate with your physician and carrier for you. You can be seen same-day or within 48 hours.
How do you keep everyone — provider, employer, and carrier — on the same page?
We built our own systems — Echo for records and Lune for clinical documentation — to send updates, plan-of-care certifications, and bulk records requests to all parties in one coordinated flow. Because we’re independent, we work with every local provider, and when you call, a real person picks up and gets on the phone with your providers directly.
